How Does the Government Think About Value?

This month’s edition of Goverment Leader features an intriguing article about a new research center sponsored by Accenture called the "Institute for Public Service Value". At a minimum, they aim to help the government take a close look at how they deliver value to the customer, and to ensure that this value is acceptable based on the amount of tax dollars spent. The main purpose of the Institute is, "to provide research and analysis to help public service agencies and governments improve performance and better serve their constituents".

The article also mentions that this particular research center is not the only one to be sponsored by a private company. In fact, the Institute’s Executive Director Greg Parston expects to see more of this happening. "‘The shape of the public sector is changing,’ he said, noting the emergence of a ‘hybrid economy’ in which governments, nonprofits and private contractors combine to provide public services." It is fascinating how simply rethinking the concept of ‘value’ could profoundly impact a spectrum of departments, including policy, personnel and training.
